Whilst we all appreciate the absolute need for producing a detailed Method Statement prior to starting work (or indeed, preparing a quotation), one needs to develop a sixth sense or ‘Alarm Bells’ as I call it, whilst carrying out the requisite survey.
On this particular project, I am cheerfully informed by the client that there is no problem with using the oak bridge to import/export materials into site, as it is ‘very strong, and made to carry heavy weights’.
As you will see from the photos, I was somewhat dubious anyway, and further inspection revealed that the builders had not aligned the bearers on the brick piers, to such an extent as to halve the strength of the timbers, by half jointing them, but only setting one half over the support!
Needless to say, the owner was not happy – but with the builders, not with me!
Top Tip here – never assume, always ascertain!
