It is difficult to know quite where to begin to describe this project. Screen fencing, using reasonable quality treated timbers, the contractor seemed to have very little experience in erecting fencing of any kind!
Note the MetPost fixings bolted to the brickwork. (This was their second attempt – the first time, using 100mm screws, the fence blew down, damaging the neighbours car, on the first day after erection) The brickwork was ‘rotten’, probably over 100 years old. Under such conditions, I would have considered using a hardwood timber plate, 100mm x 200mm bolted to the top of the wall, and fixed the vertical timbers using that plate as a foundation. It may be relatively expensive in the short term, but last for many years. Note too, the height of the vertical post. This was not sawn to height before cladding, nor was it capped. The battens were nailed to the upright post, and for some reason, some did not meet. The same section of fencing is shown in the second photograph, with the ends staggered and uneven, facing the street.
